About Camp Brainstorm
What is Camp Brainstorm?
The Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas’ Camp Brainstorm is a five-day, four-night resident summer camp experience for children with epilepsy, ages 8-17. Camp Brainstorm gives campers a life changing experience they won’t soon forget. For 5 days youth with epilepsy come together and enjoy all the fun activities and friendships that come with a trip to camp, while leaving behind various challenges epilepsy can bring to their daily lives. They are all surrounded –-some for the first time–- by dozens of other kids who know exactly what having epilepsy means. There are no worries about what people would think if they had a seizure or if they will be excluded from activities just because they are different. At Camp Brainstorm, epilepsy is the norm.
From swimming to kayaking to rock climbing, all campers get to experience the fun activities of camp, while in a safe and medically monitored setting. In the months leading up to camp, Foundation staff build relationships with the campers, as well as their parents, and develop a solid grasp of their needs. This ensures an unforgettable camp experience.
Where is Camp Brainstorm held?
Camp Brainstorm will be held June 9-13, 2014 at Camp Aranzazu in Rockport, TX. Camp Aranzazu is a therapeutic recreational camp for children with special needs. Trained staff adapt all activities to create a fun, challenging group experience. Campers balance academic skill building with camping activities to regain confidence, relax, and have fun. General camping experiences teach children with disabilities how they fit into society and how they can focus on what they can do, instead of what they cannot do.
Who can attend Camp Brainstorm?
Camp Brainstorm is open to youth ages 8-17 residing in Central & South Texas with a primary, single diagnosis of epilepsy and well controlled seizures. Children MUST be on anti-seizure medications and/or must be regulated on a physician approved alternative therapy such as Ketogenic Diet or VNS. Children attending camp must be able to care for their own basic needs, follow directions, participate in the regular camping activities and be emotionally and behaviorally ready for a live-away camp experience. Medical supervision and volunteer support are provided, but one-on-one supervision is not available. Space is limited and eligible campers are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
What is the cost to attend?
There is NO cost to attend camp, however, donations are accepted and welcomed. The cost for each camper is $750. Camp Brainstorm is funded by grants and the generous donors of the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas. 100% of all funds raised for Camp Brainstorm support camp fees.
